How to Prepare for Your Blood Test

At Jay’s Phlebotomy Service, we want your appointment to be quick, comfortable, and for you to get the most out of your visit. Following these preparation steps helps ensure we get a high-quality sample and that your lab results are a true reflection of your health.

01

Check Your Test Requirements

Some tests require special preparation such as a fasting sample or avoiding stenuous exercise before hand. If you are in any doubt about your specific requirements please ask.

If you have bought your test from another provider, please check any instructions they provided with the kit about transport and storage as well as any information about when their lab is closed etc.

02

Hydration is Key

Even if you are fasting, you should drink plenty of water.

Why? Being well-hydrated increases your blood volume, making your veins easier to find and the blood easier to draw.

The Goal: Aim to drink 2–3 glasses of water in the two hours leading up to your appointment.

03

Wear Appropriate Clothing

To draw your blood, we need easy access to the crook of your elbow (the most common site).

What to wear: Choose a shirt with sleeves that can be easily rolled up above the elbow, or a loose-fitting short-sleeved top.

Layers: If it’s cold, wear a cardigan or jacket over a short-sleeved shirt so you stay warm (warmth helps veins stay "plump") but can strip back easily for the procedure.

04

Relax and Breathe

It is perfectly normal to feel a little nervous about needles.

Tell us: If you have a history of fainting or feel very anxious, please let Jay know at the start of the appointment.

Comfort: We can perform the draw while you are lying down if that makes you feel more secure.

Distraction: Feel free to listen to music or a podcast during the procedure. It only takes a few seconds usually.
